Gilmour Space is the leading Australian rocket company, pioneering next-generation hybrid propulsion technologies for small satellite launch vehicles.

We’re recruiting for a Head of Mechanical Engineering to ensure the smooth running of the mechanical engineering department and design and test of orbital and sub-orbital class rockets and spacecraft. They will also document and communicate across teams to ensure duties are performed in an efficient and timely manner whilst adhering to Gilmour Space policies and procedures.

How you will contribute to our mission in getting Australia to space:

  • Critically review mechanical designs and structural interfaces.
  • Design and verify mechanical and structural systems to meet performance requirements for orbital and sub-orbital launch vehicles and satellite systems.
  • Develop test plans for the qualification and acceptance of mechanical sub systems.
  • Manage and plan the work allocation of the mechanical engineering team.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews for the mechanical engineering team.
  • Liaise with the other engineering departments and external stakeholders as required.
  • Ability to identify creative solutions to complex problems while meeting programmatic requirements.
  • Review specifications and other data to develop mechanical layouts.
  • Work with the Human Resources team to grow the Gilmour Space team as required.
  • Organize the timeline and milestone management of the mechanical engineering team
  • Other duties as requested by Management.

Mandatory Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 8 + years of experience in a professional mechanical engineering setting (excluding internships).
  • At least 5 years experience in a managerial capacity.
  • Highly developed CAD skills developed through design of parts and assemblies
    (Siemens NX preferred).
  • Highly developed simulation skills with at least one commercial FEA or Multiphysics simulation package (ANSYS preferred).

  • NV1 Security Clearance eligible preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead a team of 15+ mechanical engineers.
  • Ability to manage large assembly models and drawings.
  • Creative problem solver that can bring multiple disciplines together.
  • Experience with Matlab, C++, Python and other modelling and analysis tools.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
