About the role

 

As the Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will report to the Program Engineering Manager and provide expert advice and delivery of technical solutions on a range of engineering activities within the product life cycle. As a key member of the engineering leadership team for Collins Class Submarines Program, you will mentor more junior members leveraging off your excellent understanding of the design, analysis, manufacturing and support techniques associated with mechanical engineering.

 

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Responsible for any given design, sustainment or operations engineering activity, identify and co-ordinate technical activities required to progress, driving towards an acceptable solution.
  • Be an expert within your own area of specialty able to hold detailed technical discussions alone in front of customers (internal and external).
  • Have an excellent understanding of the design, analysis, manufacturing and support techniques associated with mechanical enigneering, and a solid awareness of techniques and technologies that may interface with equipment.
  • Responsible for the safety of equipment for which they have ownership, including design, manufacture, test, installation, set to work, operation, maintenance and disposal.
  • Expected to make critical engineering decisions throughout the lifecycle of the project/product.
  • Support the technical and personal development of team members including, where applicable, the duties of line managers.
  • Provide guidance, counsel and challenge to develop and mentor more junior engineers
  • Lead technical investigations and analysis applying technical judgement from experience as part of decision making and recommendation.

 

About you

 

You are an experienced Mechanical Engineer with an accredited degree in an Engineering discipline. You hold a membership within a relevant engineering body, preferably with chartered status and with a desire for Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

Your communication skills both written and verbal are characterised by accuracy and clarity, allowing you to successfully engage with internal and external stakeholders, support technical information presentations and discussions, (including formal reviews) and support junior engineers.

You have good understanding of the design, analysis, manufacturing, and support techniques and are able to make multi-domain engineering decisions throughout the lifecycle of the program/product.

With a strong emphasis on safety, you are familiar with conducting multi-domain technical risk assessment and ensuring procedures, codes and standards are correctly identified and applied to engineering and technical activities.
